The Wander Years...Taking Time to Celebrate and Honor Two Amazing People

In January, I was at mom's house when she received the phone call. It was time to select the date for Dad's internment at Arlington National Cemetery. Mom was so excited that the day was finally being decided upon. We chose July 22, got some further instructions and began calling Dad's family. His brother Jim would be there with his wife and my cousin Blaze who is in the Air Force Reserve full time. His sister Barbara and her husband, Edgar, would fly up from Florida and be there. We were all looking forward to honoring dad at Arlington for his 21 years of active duty service in the Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mom especially was very excited to see her husband get these honors. She knew there would be a space next to him when it was her time, and we began talking and planning for July 22.

Fast forward to April. Mom has been diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma and is being given 6 months to a year if she undergoes treatment. She made the strong decision to live out her life the way she wanted to and we knew she wouldn't make it more than a few months.

Patty, Mom and I had conversations and she was most upset about possibly missing Dad's ceremony at Arlington. The conversation continued, and I excused myself to call Arlington. The phone call went something like this..."My dad's ceremony is July 22, this is my mom's situation...what if....."

The kind person on the other end of the call explained the process to me and said that if there was enough time to get things in order, both of my parents could be laid to rest on the same day...if...

Well, May 6 came and mom passed away peacefully in her sleep and a week later, I called Arlington back. After a bit of paperwork and many emails, their "CASES" were linked and the unthinkable was going to happen on July 22. Patty and I would be saying goodbye to both of our parents on the same day, at the same time.

We celebrated Mom on May 20 and then began planning for July 22, a day we will never forget. It went from just Dad's family, and a small group, to including all of Mom's family and very close friends of mom and dad. We arranged for flowers at the graveside. We hired a photographer so that we could be present and still have memories to look at for years to come. We arranged private transportation to get everyone to Arlington, as many were flying in and there weren't enough cars. We spoke to the Air Force chaplain that would  be leading the service in the chapel and at graveside. We had an "escort" from Arlington Cemetery that would guide us through all of the formalities before and on the day of. We learned about what it meant for dad to be receive "FULL HONORS," to include an Air Force Escort Platoon, an Air Force band, a bugler and a firing squad. Mom would have loved every minute of it and we know they were both watching and celebrating with all of us that were there.

Reflecting back on that day almost two weeks ago...it was sad, it was a celebration...and it was filled with love. Like any good family get together, there were moments of hilarity and moments of "You can't make this $--- up." We laughed (a lot), we cried, we hugged and we spent time together.

It was a tale of 4 families coming together to celebrate two people that meant the world to each and every person present. The West family (dad's side), the Knowlton family (mom's side), the Rahn family (Don's sisters, father and extended family that had gotten to know mom and dad as their own), and the Bernardo family (Ev's siblings and extended family that also had grown very close to mom and dad). Also included were very close friends that had grown up with mom and dad and been part of our "chosen family" for many, many years.

Not only did we share a day together, we have lifelong inside jokes that I am sure will resurface whenever we get together again. Though mom and dad weren't physically present for all of the togetherness and shenanigans over the three days, I know they were holding hands, watching and laughing right along with us. I know they would be proud of Patty and I. We did it!! We pulled together four different families and we celebrated our parents in a way that will never be forgotten!

As I said, it was more than just a time to honor dad. It was a time for togetherness and celebrating family!

We love you mom and dad!!!

The Wander Years: Two Trips, One Adventure, and Family Time in Key West

Some stories take a little longer to write.

It's been more than three months since this Florida adventure, and I finally feel ready to put it into words. At the time, Don and I didn't realize this getaway would become a much-needed pause before life changed completely. Just days after we returned home, my mom's health declined rapidly, and the weeks that followed were spent supporting her through the final chapter of her life.

Looking back now, I'm especially grateful for this trip. What began as a peaceful escape exploring the Everglades together became a joyful reunion in Key West with three of our favorite girls. It was a vacation filled with nature, laughter, connection, and moments that quietly prepared our hearts for the season that was about to come.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some vacations are all about one destination. Others feel like two completely different adventures rolled into one—and that's exactly what made this Florida getaway so memorable.
Don and I began our journey immersed in the wild beauty of Everglades National Park. We traded busy schedules for quiet boardwalks, winding waterways, incredible wildlife, and the peaceful rhythm that only nature can provide. After a few days of exploring together, we headed south to Key West, where three special girls joined us for a completely different kind of adventure. Suddenly, our days were filled with colorful streets, waterfront restaurants, sunset celebrations, and the simple joy of spending time together.

Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing. The Everglades gave us space to slow down and reconnect with nature. Key West reminded us that some of the best travel memories come from sharing new experiences with the people you love. Together, they created the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and connection.

It was the perfect reminder that retirement has given us the freedom to enjoy both kinds of travel—peaceful time together as a couple and unforgettable moments with the people we love most.

Here's a look at one Florida adventure that offered the best of both worlds.

Wednesday, March 25

We boarded an afternoon flight and headed straight to our hotel to check in. This first leg was all about Everglades National Park, so we stayed in a hotel in Florida City, just a few minutes from everything Everglades.

Tru Hotel in Florida City - definitely a hotel for the younger crowd. :)

Not many restaurant choices, so we had dinner at the Capri Restaurant both nights and it was delicious!

Thursday, March 26

The next morning we woke up early to check off a bucket list item, an airboat ride through the Everglades Swamps. It was exactly what we expected, so much fun and we had a private boat also.

After the airboat ride, the rest of the day was exploring the Everglades. We had to stop at this roadside stand, Robert Is Here, it was highly recommended as one of those roadside attractions you can't miss and it was about 5 minutes from our hotel.

the smoothies came highly recommended! And they delivered.

Next stop...entering Everglades!

Lots of boardwalk "hikes" along the water. Lots of alligators and beautiful views. It was a great day exploring!

Friday, March 27

The next morning we began the trek to Key West from the Miami area. I had researched stops along the way and we had a great time driving the Overseas Highway!

First stop was Rain Barrel Village on Islamadora. It was fun and we got the obligatory picture in front of Betsy, the famous lobster!

Next stop was Marathon Key and we had a great luch with a view at Island Fish Co.

We arrived at our 3 bedroom AirBnB in Key West in time to relax before picking Katie up at the Key West airport. The house was right off Duval Street and we were able to walk everywhere. The inside was beautiful and we appreciated the back yard oasis...lots of space to relax and enjoy family time with the girls.

It wouldn't be Key West without a bar at the baggage claim area

We picked up Katie and spent the evening exploring Duval Street and the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square. Carleigh and Elisabeth weren't scheduled to land until closer to 10:00 pm.

We had a great dinner at Alonzo's Oyster Bar - I love family time!!

We started the Key Lime Pie tour with a stop at Kermit's! It didn't disappoint.

Saturday, March 28

With the family all together, Saturday was a beach day. We headed to Fort Zachary Taylor and enjoyed their beautiful beach!

After a great beach day, we all cleaned up and made our way to the Southernmost Point and then had a great dinner at Louie's Backyard. It was beautiful and worth the recommendation to make reservations at least a month in advance.

It wouldn't be a Rahn vacation without photo shoots!!

Sunday, March 29

On our final day together, we found a great breakfast and then made our way to the Key West Butterfly Conservatory. It was a lot of fun, especially the time with the butterflies and birds flying freely.

Lovebirds!!

Don, Katie and I then took a tour of Truman The Little White House. It was very impressive.

Afternoon cocktail break at Willie T's - another perk of traveling with your adult children!!

Another photoshoot in the back yard of our AirBnB! :)

Our final dinner together was at Blue Heaven, this restaurant came highly recommended by many friends. It was lots of fun. We got a perfect table outside and enjoyed all of the resident roosters.

Another epic Key Lime Pie

Monday, March 30

Katie had an early morning flight home, so after dropping her at the airport we headed to tour the Earnest Hemmingway House with Carleigh and Elisabeth.

We had a nice lunch at Mangoes and then prepared for our flight home. Carleigh and Elisabeth stayed another night and flew home on Tuesday. It was a great getaway with my "big kids," and many memories were made!

As our Florida adventure came to an end, we made a last-minute decision to change our plans. Instead of driving back across the state, we returned our rental car at the Key West airport and caught a flight home. At the time, it simply felt like the easiest way to get back. Looking back, I'm grateful we trusted that instinct.

We returned home with more than photos and memories. We carried the quiet beauty of the Everglades, the laughter of family in Key West, and hearts refreshed by time spent together.

The Wander Years continue to remind me that adventure isn't about checking destinations off a list. It's about saying yes to experiences that bring joy, strengthen relationships, and fill our hearts for whatever life holds next. Sometimes the greatest gift of a journey isn't just where it takes you—it's what you bring home with you.
